Fantasy Impact of First Week of Free Agency

March 19, 2012 in Fantasy Advise

So we’re into the first weekend of the free agency period, the time dynasty fans love to watch as their players movements either make or break their value.  This year has been particularly exciting with some high profile trades, high profile free agents and an aging superstar quarterback choosing his next Super Bowl contender to join.  Here is my take on the fantasy and dynasty impact of the major moves that occurred this week.

  1. Brandon Marshall traded to the Bears – The Dolphins gave up a 2nd round pick to get Marshall and gave him up for 2 3rd rounders, after 2 very average seasons.  Sounds pretty good on paper.  Add Marshall’s latest legal troubles and the Dolphins probably win the most in this trade.  Now, from a fantasy perspective, Marshall may be suspended for some time, but it won’t be enough to de-value his fantasy prospects.  He’s 27 and is joining Jay Cutler again.  There is no doubt from a fantasy perspective that both will benefit, as will Matt Forte from having less people at the line of scrimmage.  Moving up: Brandon Marshall, Jay Cutler and Matt Forte. Moving down: Any Miami QB
  2. Mario Williams to the Bills – From an IDP perspective, this really is a HUGE deal.  Williams, despite oft being injured, was a very productive 4-3 DE for fantasy purposes.  When Houston moved to a 3-4 last year and made him a LB, his stock plummeted and rightfully so.  I am one of those fateful players who was begging Williams to find a 4-3 defensive team to land.  Dave Wannstedt is an awful NFL head coach, college too for that matter, but he’s an awesome defensive coordinator so look for him to highlight Williams in his defense and get him back to the 15-20 sack range as a 4-3 DE.  Thank the almighty!!! Moving up: Mario Williams, Brooks Reed Moving down: nobody
  3. Vincent Jackson to the Buccaneers – I hate this move from a fantasy perspective.  Now, Greg Schiano’s offense might be much more productive than Raheem Morris’ but at this point it’s impossible to know and Jackson just took a step down for the sake of money.  Will he be a 1,000 yard receiver, yes, but he won’t be a top 5 fantasy producer like he could have been with Chicago.  Moving up: Josh Freeman Moving Down: Vincent Jackson
  4. Pierre Garcon to the Redskins – eh.  Garcon is a very good, but not great, receiver who will have a very good, but not great, rookie quarterback.  I think in time his numbers will be good, but I also would temper expectations for next season.  Moving Up: RGIII Moving Down: Andrew Luck
  5. Martellus Bennett to the Giants – This does sound like a match made in heaven but it’s important to note here that Bennett has not proven anything in his young career yet.  He’s got the size and speed to be elite and now he has the QB and WR tandem too, the question is…can he step up?  Nobody knows, but he’s got enough potential to take a flyer on, that’s for sure. Moving Up: Martellus Bennett, Eli Manning.  Moving Down:
  6. Matt Flynn to Seattle – I’ll be honest with you on this one, I don’t get the excitement around Matt Flynn.  Yes he had two great passing games, both against bottom third passing defenses in meaningless games in which nobody cared who won.  He has shown some improvement in his game and development as an NFL QB for sure.  That’s pretty much all you get with Matt Flynn.  No experience, no proof that he can do it week in and week out.  He’s got far less weapons in Seattle than Green Bay.  There are a lot of red flags for me here.  Buyer beware.  Moving up: Matt Flynn, Sidney Rice, Marshawn Lynch
  7. Robert Meachem to the Chargers – I think this is a great move for Robert Meachem.  Philip Rivers is a great QB, Norv Turner is a great offensive mind and while Meachem is kind of a one trick pony, a deep third reciever, so is Mike Wallace and look at the year he had last year.  Meachem is in good hands, get him if you can.  Moving up: Robert Meachem
  8. Carl Nicks to the Buccaneers – Fantasy footballers don’t usually pay much attention to where linemen go during free agency, but this is worth taking notice.  Nicks was considered by far and away the best free agent linemen on the market and he went to a team that was dreadful running the ball last year.  New head coach Greg Schiano loves to run the ball and I see this acquisition as a watershed event for the team.  Whomever is the #1 rusher in Tampa Bay next year, whether it’s incumbent LeGarrette Blount or rookie Trent Richardson or someone else, their path will now be a whole lot easier.  Moving up: Tampa Bay running backs
  9. Laurent Robinson to the Jaguars – Doesn’t it seem like Laurent Robinson has been around for a long time? He’s only 26 years old and for the first time in his career he’s going to be the #1 receiver.  That’s the good news, the bad news is that it’s in Jacksonville.  There is no QB to throw him balls like Tony Romo, that’s for sure.  At least in the short term I see him struggling here despite having more opportunity, but he’s young enough to make this work if Jacksonville’s QB situation turns around.  Moving down: Laurent Robinson
  10. Brandon Lloyd to the Patriots – This one is interesting.  Certainly Lloyd’s opportunity has improved but I don’t think he’ll have the same impact that Randy Moss had, or even that he had in Denver 2 seasons ago.  He’ll be 31 next season and he’s only got a couple of good seasons left.  Look for him to do better than he did in St. Louis last season but not as good as he did in Denver 2 years ago.  Moving Up: Brandon Lloyd

Top 10 Dynasty Wide Receivers

February 17, 2012 in Dynasty Advise

During the off-season there is a lot of time to think!  What rookies to draft, who to trade for, what new teams to which your free agent players are moving.  This is a great time to start a new series Top 10 Dynasty player articles.  Check out our Top 10 Lists page for the rest of this collection of articles.  I have not included rookies here as there is no telling what situations they will get into at this point and how any of them will react to the rigors of an NFL season.  We have a separate ranking section for rookies here.

Note: If you’re a die hard dynasty player, there is no need to read this paragraph.  If you are not, keep in mind this is dynasty value of current running backs in the NFL.  While some of these players may be top producers next year, some will not.  Dynasty value lies not only on how a player will produce next year, but how they will produce in coming years, how long they can produce over time, the quality of the team they are on, the opportunity that they currently have or potentially have in the coming few years.

  1. Calvin Johnson, WR DET – Megatron, what more can you ask for?  Great QB? Check.  Productive offense? Check.  Plenty of red zone targets? Check.  Size, speed, hands, youth? Check, check, check and check!  He’s at the top of his game and he’s only 26.  Feel fortunate if you have him.
  2. Hakeem Nicks, WR NYG –  The G-men have found a passing game and while Victor Cruz is a key component, don’t fool yourself into believing he’s the #1 WR.  That designation belongs to Hakeem Nicks and it showed in the playoff run.  He’s still only 24, he has a QB that is peaking at the right time in his career and he has Victor Cruz to keep him from two much double teaming. He should be productive for a long-time to come.
  3. Greg Jennings, WR GB – Jennings was hurt the last 3 games in 2011 or else he would have been a top 10 WR this season.  Instead that distinction went to Jordy Nelson.  No matter, Jennings does have to contend with a ball distribution type of offense, but the offense is so productive and he’s only 28, there’s no reason to believe he won’t be uber-productive for 5 more years.
  4. Jordy Nelson, WR GB – I couldn’t get myself to place Nelson in front of Jennings but I have no problem puttin him right behind him.  Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy are young and there is no sign of this offense slowing down.  Nelson is only 25 and is the unquestioned #2 target in this offense.  Don’t sleep on him.
  5. Larry Fitzgerald, WR ARI – If Fitz had the QB situation that Megatron has, he’d be #2 on this list.  He doesn’t, but he’s been productive despite that.  Before he retires his QB situation will get better (can it get any worse?) and so will his stats.  He’s still only 28 and has plenty of time left to produce.
  6. Percy Harvin, WR MIN – Harvin is only 23, finished just outside of the top 10 in 2011 and quietly had a very nice run at the end of the season, even during the time Adrian Peterson was still playing.  The QB situation will get better in Minnesota and with AP hurt, he has a chance to establish himself as the stat producer he was at Florida next season.
  7. A.J Green, WR CIN – Green would be higher if it weren’t for the fact that the 6 above him are almost just as young and more productive now.  That being said, his talent and productivity as a rookie speaks for itself and he will be somewhere on this list for many more years to come.
  8. Julio Jones, WR ATL – Green and Jones will always be compared so why not put them side by side on the list?  Jones was very productive in his own right, he is not the #1 guy but he will be eventually (although Roddy White shows little signs of slowing down right now).  If you have him, you are a happy man.
  9. Kenny Britt, WR TEN – Britt was injured last year and the year before so he is now on the injury prone list.  That being said, when he’s on the field he is ridiculously productive and he’s only 23.  If he can stay healthy and put it all together next year, not only will he be a perennial top 10er, he’ll be much higher on this list.
  10. Mike Wallace, WR PIT – Now the unquestioned #1 WR in Pittsburgh with a great QB and a poor running game (did you ever think you’d here that about the Steelers?), Wallace is only 25 and should stay productive for a long time.  He’s kind of a one trick pony, not as athletic and big as most other guys on this list.  That said, he’s fast as heck and productive and that’s all you need in a top 10 WR.

Also Considered:

  • Andre Johnson, WR HOU – Some will argue with this and I understand, but he’s 30 now and oft-injured
  • Vincent Jackson, WR SD – Only 28 but has ups and downs
  • Wes Welker, WR NE – Will be productive but is 30 now and will start to decline as speed leaves him
  • Victor Cruz, WR NYG – One more year like the last and he may well crack the top 10. Only 25
  • Marques Colston, WR NO – Injuries have slowed him from year to year but still a productive guy
  • Roddy White, WR ATL – The only problem with White right now is age, he will be a top 10er a couple of more years, then fade
  • Brandon Marshall, WR MIA – Showed in the Pro Bowl, just needs a QB
  • Dwayne Bowe, WR KC – Young and productive but too inconsistent to get into the top 10
  • Dez Bryant, WR DAL – See Dwayne Bowe
  • DeSean Jackson, WR PHI – See Dez Bryant

Not Considered:

  • Steve Smith, WR CAR – Can he do it again next year, maybe, but he’s 32, the clock is ticking
  • Steve Johnson, WR BUF – #1 receiver on your team doesn’t mean you’re actually a #1 receiver
  • Anquan Boldin, WR BAL – At 31, past his prime and inconsistent QB play
  • Pierre Garcon, WR IND – This could change but not productive enough
  • Reggie Wayne, WR IND – at 33, he’s done, no matter what situation he gets into as a free agent
  • Brandon Lloyd, WR STL – Actually like his situation, but at 30 years old, time is running out

Top 5 Free Agents With Dynasty Impact

January 29, 2012 in Fantasy Advise

There are a ton of free agents every year but only a few really have a positive impact from a dynasty perspective.  Here are my list of the top 5 free agents that if they move to the right situation, could be better statistically than they have been in the past.

  • Jermichael Finley – Here’s an interesting situation, a top 5 TE that under-performed the last 2 seasons?  2 seasons ago he finished on IR and last year he was thought to be a guy who could be in the Gronkowski/Graham mold and compete with those guys.  He didn’t and he disappointed many, despite his top 5 finish.  Strictly from a fantasy perspective, Finley would be better off moving to another team where he’d be a top target.  If that happens this summer, the sky is the limit.  Possible suitors: Dolphins, Seahawks, Bears.
  • Matt Flynn – Another Green Bay product that will most likely be moving on this year.  Honestly, he scares me and I don’t think he’s nearly as good as his 6 TD outing would suggest.  Much like Kevin Kolb last year, he’s never truly shown that he can be successful consistently.  Whatever team he goes to he will be surrounded by much less talent on offense so it won’t be a cakewalk for him either.  All of that being said, he’ll get his shot and he could be very productive.  Possible Suitors: Dolphins, Seahawks, Chiefs, Broncos.
  • Vincent Jackson – Something just wasn’t right in San Diego this year was it?  Philip Rivers was having problems and Jackson seemed like he just didn’t care anymore.  That will change if he gets the payoff he so desperately desires.  Jackson had extremely variable results last season, getting 30+ fantasy points one game then 2 points the next game.  You just couldn’t rely on him. But you know what?  Despite that he finished in the top 10.  My guess is, if he goes to a team with a good QB, he gets more consistent next season and gets back into the top 5.  Possible suitors: Bears, Jaguars, Buccaneers, 49ers.
  • Peyton Hillis – Here’s a guy on a terrible team who has produced for them despite a lack of talent around him and injuries that plagued him after his “madden cursed” year last season.  If he gets into a good offensive team, there is no doubt he can be a battering ram and improve on the stats he produced in Cleveland.  He’s never going to be a top 5 RB, but just from a TD perspective he can definitely be a top 10 RB for many more years on the right team.  Possible suitors: 49ers, Cardinals, Buccaneers, Colts
  • Jason Campbell – My final guy is a flier that I think will work out handsomely for some team.  Jason Campbell is certainly an enigma but he was having a darn good season last year prior to his injury.  There is no way he’s staying in Oakland after they broke the bank for Carson Palmer.  So if Campbell lands in a spot that affords him a starting opportunity and he doesn’t get hurt, he will be a sneaky pick-up for somebody’s fantasy squad. Possible suitors: Jaguars, Jets, Seahawks
